XXXVII RALLYE ELBA STORICO – LOCMAN ITALY TROPHY PRESENTED THIS MORNING

The event, scheduled for September 25–27, was unveiled to authorities and media in the auditorium of the historic headquarters of the daily newspaper Il Tirreno, on Viale Alfieri in Livorno.
The commitment to making this an event for the entire island was reiterated.
Entries remain open until September 10.

Livorno, September 3, 2025 – The XXXVII Rallye Elba Storico – Locman Italy Trophy was presented this morning. Run over three legs on September 25, 26 and 27, it is the eighth of ten rounds of the FIA European Historic Rally Championship and the seventh (penultimate) round of the Italian Historic Rally Championship.

Held in the auditorium of Il Tirreno’s historic Viale Alfieri headquarters—one of Livorno’s landmarks—the press conference confirmed, through the speakers’ remarks, the central role the rally plays in promoting the territory, of which it has become an integral part.
Entries are open until September 10 for this classic late-summer island event by ACI Livorno Sport, now entering the most intense phase of preparation. Expectations are high as always, with the organisers—together with the island’s administrations and the enthusiastic support of partners—ready to seize a new opportunity.

Editor-in-chief Cristiano Marcacci opened the proceedings, introducing a series of speeches that reaffirmed the will to give the event ever greater support. Symbolically, Il Tirreno “handed over the keys” of the newspaper to ACI Livorno President Marco Fiorillo, who described the rally as the most important Italian event for historic cars. He highlighted the rally’s return to the FIA championship after a year’s absence and the renewed involvement of the International Federation in the project.

“We put maximum effort into this project with the FIA,” said Fiorillo, “and the results will be seen on the stages. The key difference between a ‘modern’ rally and a ‘historic’ one is the charm and following that the latter enjoys. If modern rallying is more of a pure competition, historic rallying represents the history of the global community. We hope this September’s rally will close the Elban season with a great show.”
From a technical perspective, he underlined the difficulty of the route: “Our rally is demanding because Elba’s roads are special and tough, with constantly changing surfaces that require maximum commitment.”

Finally, he outlined this year’s new features: “We have a different project, developed with Luciano Fiori. We decided to involve more municipalities. The start will be in Porto Azzurro and then Capoliveri, but we also wanted to include other ‘actors’, such as Portoferraio, where Rally HQ will be based. There is important synergy with the municipalities and all the administrators are satisfied.”
ACI Livorno Sport President, LUCIANO FIORI: “First, thank you to Il Tirreno for hosting us again—an excellent calling card—and let me begin by thanking the Road Police, who always give us wide support and cooperation.
Thanks also to the many Elbans who came this morning; it’s a strong, important sign of love for their rally, and an encouragement for us as organisers to keep going.

All of this in an organisational context that is increasingly difficult: on one side the economic crisis, on the other rising costs.
In spite of this, the facts speak for themselves—the numbers the rally brings to the island every year translate into strong support for the tourism sector, creating jobs and wealth. I must note, however, that this seems not to resonate enough with local administrators—and that’s a pity, because this event has significant value for the territory as well as for national motorsport, a value many would like to take away at national and European level.
For now, we are holding on; we are trying to build networks, but we would like greater recognition because, in Italy, Rallye Elba Storico is one of the three major motorsport events, alongside Rally d’Italia (WRC) and Rally di Roma Capitale (ERC). They can rely on large budgets; we are struggling—I say this openly.

And this is a serious shortcoming, considering the Rallye Elba has been writing the history of road racing for almost sixty years. This should be acknowledged, especially with regard to the Elban community and its sporting fabric, more vibrant than ever.
We also support the Anna Puccini charity (ONLUS), named after the young rally fan we tragically lost a few years ago, and we are committed to ‘green’ initiatives, planting trees to offset racing car CO₂ emissions—an issue that concerns us all. We hope this event will be increasingly understood and appreciated for what it has given and what it can still give. We trust in the future, hand in hand with institutions, because we are dealing with a unique asset.”

ANGELO ZINI, former mayor of Portoferraio and a long-time supporter of rallying on Elba and its value: “I’ve followed the rally since I was a child: I was born with this passion and nurtured it in every way. Rallye Elba is one of the most important and long-standing sporting events in the area. There’s no other event on the island with this history. If a motorsport event reaches almost 60 years, it means tremendous work has been done to keep an event of such magnitude on the island. It’s a sport that continues to fuel the passion of those who live here, those who are born here, and those who come to watch. The rally drives tourism and increases interest in the event year after year.”
Engineer FLORIO FACCENDI, President of Banca Centro, confirmed the bank’s support for this major sporting event—an endorsement that further strengthens its ties with ACI Livorno. “For over ten years we have continued our commitment with ACI Livorno, firmly believing in our participation to help these two major sporting events grow.”

Finally, ANDREA VOLPI, Elban driver representing the island’s sporting community, praised the quality of the route design. The event features more stages and longer mileage, returning to a three-day format. Regarding the Historic Rally, Volpi added: “I’m particularly fond of it because of its history—a history that still moves us today. It’s an event that delivers great emotions, both technically and for the island itself.”
The September 24 conference in Capoliveri

The important Capoliveri appointment on September 24 was also recalled. At 11:00, at the Teatro Flamingo, the conference “Past and Present in Napoleon’s Footsteps” will take place—an event promoted in collaboration with Il Tirreno exploring the deep bond between Elba Island, Napoleon Bonaparte and the rally’s sporting tradition. It will be the third initiative of this kind, accompanying last year’s September edition and the spring “modern” rally, combining the sporting moment with thoughtful reflection—this time bringing past and present together, with memory as a driver of collective identity and social cohesion.

The President of the Tuscany Region, Eugenio Giani, will once again attend, having shown great interest in Rallye Elba’s potential as a vehicle for promoting the territory. Alongside him, ACI Livorno President Marco Fiorillo, ACI Livorno Sport President Luciano Fiori, Walter Montagna (Mayor of Capoliveri), Tiziano Nocentini (Mayor of Portoferraio) and Professor Giovanni Cipriani (historian) will speak.

Three legs, ten special stages, enduring appeal

The programme comprises three legs and ten special stages, totalling 133.38 competitive km over an overall route of 366.96 km. In case of retirement in the opening Capoliveri stage, re-start will be allowed the following day.
The route has been designed in harmony with island life: Leg 1 in Capoliveri, Leg 2 in the western area, Leg 3 in the eastern area—a balanced mix of technique and spectacle, without being intrusive for everyday life.
