XXXVII RALLYE ELBA STORICO – LOCMAN ITALY TROPHY IT’S A “LOMBARDO-THREEPEAT”
Three intense days of competition, full of twists and turns and marked by variable weather conditions, made the Elban round of historic rallies thrilling at both European and Italian levels, once again confirming the tradition of a fascinating challenge.
The driver from Cefalù repeated his 2024 success, once again alongside his trusted co-driver Roberto Consiglio, beating “Pedro”-Baldaccini (Subaru Legacy) and Musti-Biglieri (Porsche Carrera RS) to the podium.
Portoferraio (Isola d’Elba, Livorno), 27 September 2025 – Sicilians Angelo Lombardo and Roberto Consiglio, at the wheel of a Porsche 911 RS fielded by Team Guagliardo, are the winners of the XXXVII Rallye Elba Storico – Locman Italy Trophy, the eighth round of the FIA European Historic Rally Championship and the seventh (penultimate) round of the Italian Historic Rally Championship.
As per tradition, the event organised by ACI Livorno Sport delivered high-tension moments, three days of exciting and demanding challenges, made even tougher by the ever-changing weather conditions that put many crews in difficulty, though all determined to see the chequered flag at one of the world’s most iconic rallies.
And it was precisely the Cefalù driver and his faithful co-driver who first took that chequered flag, aboard the red Stuttgart coupé, securing a second consecutive overall win and also claiming victory in the 2nd Category. It marked their third overall triumph on the island.
The Elban rally was fiercely contested, with constant lead changes. Lombardo ended the second leg in first place, taking over the lead during the final Friday stage, “Marciana Marina–Marciana–Campo,” which was heavily affected by rain. The drizzle was not violent but steady and troublesome, which Lombardo narrowly avoided, reshuffling the standings. The wet conditions also favoured four-wheel-drive cars, further complicating the scenario.
TRIUMPHANT THIRD LEG FOR LOMBARDO
Restarting the final leg in the lead, Lombardo – after gearbox issues at the end of day two – dropped back when his wiper failed during the opening test. But he immediately struck back, reclaiming the top spot with a powerful performance all the way to the Capoliveri finale.
In second place, deservedly, came “Pedro” from Brescia, with Baldaccini co-driving their Subaru Legacy RS. The former European Champion mastered the island’s stages, making good use of Subaru’s roaring four-wheel-drive, still refining his feeling with the car but steadily improving his pace and confidence.
Completing the overall podium was Matteo Musti in a Porsche Carrera RS, with Claudio Biglieri. He had led until the penultimate stage of the second leg but lost ground when rain hit in Marciana. Despite losing about 10 seconds in a spin during stage six, Musti held his nerve and remained close to the leaders, securing a valuable third overall. The Pavia driver ran with the championship in mind, edging closer to the overall title.
THE CATEGORIES
The 1st Category was won by Antonio Parisi with his trusted co-driver D’Angelo in their Porsche 911, ahead of Fiorito–Ventoso’s BMW 2002 Ti.
The 2nd Category reflected Lombardo’s victory and Musti’s second place, while Siena’s Alberto Salvini (Porsche Carrera RS, co-driven by Tagliaferri) was out of luck. After winning the opening night stage on Thursday, he slipped back with shock absorber issues on day two, ending it third. On Saturday he was forced to retire due to a broken fuel pump belt.
The 3rd Category went to Trentino’s Tiziano Nerobutto with Giulia Zanchetta in an Opel Ascona 400, followed by Pisa’s Fantei–Calandroni (Volkswagen Golf GTi) and Lo Presti–Stefani (Porsche 911 SC).
The 4th Category was claimed by “Pedro.” Second went to the British crew Will and Karen Graham in a BMW M3, and third to France’s Richard Genesca with Florent Sompayrac in a Subaru Legacy. Penalised by 3 minutes for using non-compliant auxiliary lights in the Thursday night stage at Capoliveri, the Frenchman then delivered outstanding performances throughout the rally and, without that penalty, would certainly have climbed the overall podium.
STRONG PERFORMANCES ALL ROUND
Other noteworthy performances included Matteo Ricaldone from Alessandria (now living in Maremma), co-driven by Floris, in a Peugeot 306 Maxi Kit Car. Driving it for the first time, he quickly adapted, stage after stage. A puncture on stage seven cost him about 40 seconds, but his pace was remarkable.
On the final day, Siena’s Valter Pierangioli, retired on day two with engine trouble on his Ford Sierra Cosworth 4x4, restarted and set fastest time on all five remaining stages, confirming his great talent.
Other impressive drives came from Lucca’s Giovanni Mori (BMW M3, with Frosini), who finished 7th overall; Cuneo’s Brazzoli (Porsche), despite distributor issues and a bent rim with a deflated tyre on stage six; and Rovigo’s Matteo Luise, spectacular with his Fiat Ritmo Abarth 130, always close to the front despite a car with less power than the “supercars” around him.
Pistoia’s Federico Gasperetti, co-driven by Cecchi in a Peugeot 205 GTI, also impressed. Eighth overall after the opening two stages, he dropped back when an engine mount broke on Monte Perone’s first loop, costing about 4 minutes. Still, he delivered excellent stage times, further confirming his class.
Among the expected contenders, Poland’s Maciej Lubiak (Porsche) retired on stage four after going off the road, ending his continental campaign prematurely.
THE A112 ABARTH TROPHY: DALL’AVO DOES THE DOUBLE
The spectacular A112 Abarth Trophy once again provided plenty of action. In Race 1, Dall’Avo–Piras beat Pellizzari–Vicentin by just six tenths, after the latter spun on stage five and lost the lead. Zanelli–Zanni finished third, 2.8 seconds behind. In Race 2, Dall’Avo won again, this time by 9 seconds over Zanelli, with Domenighini–Clavel third.
THE STRONG ELBAN CONTINGENT
With 20 crews entered, the local drivers and co-drivers made their presence felt. The lively “internal challenge” was won by “Lo Ciao”–Pierulivo (Opel Corsa GSi), edging out Gamba–Olla (Peugeot 205 GTI) by just 1.5 seconds. Until leg two, the top locals were Marco Galullo and Simona Calandriello (Peugeot 205 Rallye), stopped by a broken brake disc on stage seven. Andrea Volpi also retired early, his home event again proving ill-fated as a clutch cable broke after three stages. Tears too for Francesco Bettini, whose Subaru Legacy, which he was set to drive for the first time, failed mechanically before the start.
The 2025 edition of the Rallye Elba Storico confirmed its international prestige, attracting competitors from ten foreign nations: Austria, Belgium, France, Great Britain, Ireland, Poland, Monaco, Czech Republic, Switzerland and Hungary. A strong signal showing how the event promotes the territory through an emotional form of tourism that brings people from afar while enhancing the island’s image on a European level.
